What’s Purgatorio?

Purgatorio (purgatory) is the center portion of Dante’s Divine Comedy, between Inferno (hell) and Paradiso (paradise). Within Purgatorio, Dante and Virgil climb the mountain of Purgatory, visiting a series of human failings, advancing from the chaos of hell in Inferno to an enlightened state in Paradiso.

Purgatorio Cleveland is a means for individuals to collaborate in acts of creation, to improve themselves and the world that we share.

What’s with that weird triangle?

The Sierpinski Triangle is the namesake of Polish mathematician Waclaw Sierpinski. It is a fractal, a geometric construct that repeats infinitely within itself, a pattern of triangles composed of ever smaller triangles. Though the Sierpinski Triangle may be defined mathematically, it is also an artistic creation, which like many fractal patterns has appeared in art and architecture. In a final bit of symbolism, the triangular shape is evocative of the mountain of Purgatory that Dante ascends, as well as the triad of technology, arts, and education.

What is this Cleveland you speak of?

Located on the southern shore of North America's Lake Erie, Cleveland is the second largest city in the U.S. State of Ohio. It is a city in transition from its industrial past to a future of modern manufacturing, healthcare, and technology. Beyond its practical economic aspects, Greater Cleveland boasts a vibrant arts community.

So what exactly do you do?

We create good. What that means specifically will vary from project to project. In the spirit of "sunlight as the best disinfectant", it is Purgatorio Cleveland’s mission to illuminate concepts and to prompt discussion. Our principal means of expression focuses the talents of those in science and engineering, in the arts, and in education. There is no specific goal beyond a positive project outcome.
